Apple Music set for karaoke expansion with ‘Selfie Sing’ feature

Apple Music is adding a Selfie Sing feature that lets users record themselves singing to songs, initially limited to tracks on a dedicated playlist.

Apple Music Selfie Sing feature

Apple Music is preparing a karaoke-style feature called Selfie Sing, which lets users record themselves singing along to songs. The launch comes as Spotify may be preparing its own tool for remixing songs with artificial intelligence (AI).

How Selfie Sing works#

The details come from an analysis of new features in Apple’s iOS (iPhone operating system) 27.3 software and a dedicated Selfie Sing playlist within the Apple Music app. The in-app text reads: “Pick your favorite, record a Selfie Sing, add mic effects to your voice, then save or share your video selfie with anyone you like.”

The same text adds: “No pitch-perfect anything required, just you, the song, and the moment.”

Limited to one playlist for now#

For now, the feature appears limited to songs on the Selfie Sing playlist rather than Apple Music’s entire catalogue. Tracks on the playlist are by the following artists:

  • Aretha Franklin
  • Cyndi Lauper
  • Madonna
  • Oasis
  • Duran Duran
  • Britney Spears

Based on that line-up, Sony Music and Warner Music Group, or various of their imprints, appear to be participating.
