65.2 Per Cent of South Africa’s Own Spotify Chart Cannot Be Placed by Origin. Nigeria’s Same Gap Is 13.4 Per Cent

65.2 per cent of the chart streams on Spotify’s own South Africa daily Top 200 belong to lead artists this desk’s roster cannot place by country at all, on 22 September 2026. Nigeria’s own chart has the same problem on 13.4 per cent of its streams. Egypt’s has it on 15.6 per cent. The gap is not a finding about who is popular in South Africa. It is a finding about which South African artists a MusicBrainz-built registry can see.

This desk measures a chart’s African share by matching each charting lead artist’s Spotify ID against its own roster, built from MusicBrainz lookups plus sourced manual overrides, then classifying the artist as African or not. An artist the roster cannot place at all does not get counted as unknown. In every one of this desk’s prior published shares, it defaults into the non-African bucket. That default is the story below.

The unplaced rows on South Africa’s chart are not obscure. Ranked by streams, the list opens with Inkos’yamagcokama, Nkeshemba, G-Jealous, Sam Deep and Mzukulu, and running further down it includes Focalistic. What every one of them lacks is a MusicBrainz entry linked to its specific Spotify ID with a country tag this desk’s automated lookup can read, and this desk has not yet worked through 92 rows one at a time the way it has previously worked through smaller, flagged batches on other markets. One name on the list, Inkos’yamagcokama, appears as two separate rows because two different Spotify artist IDs carry that exact name, a page-split this desk has flagged before on other artists and has not resolved here, so the 92 rows are 91 distinct names, not 92. Morocco’s chart carries the same problem at a smaller scale, 46.3 per cent unresolved, while Nigeria and Egypt’s charts, the two markets this desk has spent the most roster-building effort on, sit at 13.4 and 15.6 per cent.

This is not one or two artists dragging the total. A leave-one-row-out check on the 92 unplaced rows, ranked by streams, shows the single largest row accounts for only 4.6 per cent of the unresolved total; dropping the five largest rows still leaves 81.1 per cent of it in place.

That rules out the easy fix, but it does not make the 92 rows one kind of gap. Splitting them by whether the roster has even matched a MusicBrainz identity at all: 70 rows, worth 2,324,531 streams, have no MusicBrainz match logged whatsoever, a genuine blank. The other 22, worth 1,131,446 streams, do carry a matched MusicBrainz identity, most of them matched with high confidence via a direct Spotify-ID link, yet still carry no country. Checking five of those 22 against MusicBrainz’s own public data directly turns up no single cause: some matched MusicBrainz entries have no country recorded upstream either, so the match exists but the data genuinely is not there; one, Focalistic, matches a MusicBrainz entry that does carry a country upstream, which this desk’s roster simply did not carry over; and one, Benzoo, matches, via a lower-confidence name search rather than a Spotify-ID link, an apparently unrelated artist entry based in Germany, a mismatch that is a reason to distrust that match rather than a reason to fill in the missing country. Roughly a third of the unresolved streams, in other words, are not a coverage gap at all; they are already-matched artists this desk has not yet finished checking.

The gap also is not a one-day artefact. Checked across the five most recent dates this desk holds a raw chart snapshot for, South Africa’s unresolved share never drops below 62.6 per cent and reaches 72.6 per cent on 21 September.

**Why this matters beyond a methodology footnote.** This desk has previously reported South Africa’s own chart as the least African of the four home markets it tracks, at 13.9 per cent African-origin on this same 22 September snapshot. That comparison used the same roster this piece is now auditing, and the roster hands South Africa’s 91 unplaced artist names to the non-African side of the ledger by default. The true African share of South Africa’s own chart on 22 September sits somewhere between 13.9 per cent, if every unplaced artist turns out to be non-African, and 79.1 per cent, if every one of them turns out to be African, an unresolved range this piece does not narrow. Any priced or percentage claim this desk has made about South Africa’s chart composition, or would make going forward, inherits that same range until the unplaced names are individually resolved.

**Limits.** This measures one registry’s coverage, this desk’s own, built primarily on MusicBrainz plus manual fixes for previously flagged rows. It says nothing about whether these artists chart outside South Africa, what they earn, or who represents them; none of that is measured here. Unresolved is not the same as foreign, and it is also not the same as African: it is genuinely unknown by this method, and this piece deliberately does not guess which way the 91 names actually split. The pattern that unresolved artists are concentrated in maskandi, amapiano and gqom credits is read from the artist names and genre reputation, not verified against MusicBrainz’s internal editor logs, so the explanation for why the gap exists is inference, not measurement; the size of the gap is measurement.

**What this desk is doing about it, and what an artist or label can do.** This piece is itself the trigger for fixing it: the names above are now a working list, and resolving them with sourced evidence, the way this desk has already done for smaller flagged batches on Egypt, Algeria and Angola-Portugal cross-border cases, is the next job before any further South Africa-priced piece publishes. For an independent South African label, the practical takeaway is narrower and more immediate: if MusicBrainz has not linked your artist’s Spotify ID to a country, a measurement built the way this desk’s roster is built will silently misclassify that artist as non-African. Claiming and correctly tagging a MusicBrainz entry with a linked Spotify ID is a five-minute task with a measurable effect on how an artist’s own market counts them.
