Motown Gospel Africa is the African arm of Motown Gospel, Universal Music Group’s US gospel label, operated through Universal Music Africa. It launched at a press conference in Kinshasa on 20 September 2019, during that year’s African Music Forum, with three founding signings: Congolese gospel singer Dena Mwana, Deborah Lukalu and pastor-singer Lord Lombo.
Like the group’s other African imprints, it is not an independent company; Universal Music Africa’s general manager Moussa Soumbounou fronted the 2019 launch and spoke of ambitions to bring African gospel artists to venues such as Paris’s Zenith, Olympia and Bercy. The label has no standalone website; its public presence runs through a Facebook page based in Abidjan and an Instagram account, @motowngospelafrica.
