Canon EOS R8 Mark II full-frame mirrorless camera

Canon has announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a lightweight full-frame mirrorless camera designed for travel and everyday photography.

The camera combines a full-frame sensor with in-body stabilisation and is designed to capture wider views, background blur and low-light scenes. It follows the EOS R8 and adds greater control and capability in a compact body.

Sensor, speed and stabilisation#

The EOS R8 Mark II uses a 24.2MP full-frame CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensor and a DIGIC X processor. The sensor and processor are designed to deliver clarity, colour and dynamic range.

  • Stabilisation: In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS) with up to 7.5 stops of stability
  • Continuous shooting: 40 fps with a buffer for up to 73 RAW files in a single burst
  • Pre-continuous shooting: H+ mode records about half a second before the shutter is fully pressed, providing up to 20 extra images

Autofocus and subject tracking#

The camera uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with Deep Learning subject detection to recognise and track people, animals and vehicles. Tracking covers eye, face, head and body, and the system is designed to maintain focus when a subject briefly leaves the frame.

Autofocus operates in light levels as low as EV -7.5, the same rating as the flagship EOS R1 professional camera.

Register People Priority lets users register up to 10 faces in the camera and up to 100 on a memory card. The camera can then recognise registered individuals and focus according to the priority set by the user.

Design, lenses and connectivity#

The EOS R8 Mark II introduces a revised design within Canon’s EOS R System, with customisable buttons, controls and modes. A multi-controller is included for handheld operation, and the optional Canon Extension Grip EG-E2 adds a separate tripod socket and direct access to the camera battery.

It is compatible with Canon RF lenses, including the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM, RF 45mm F1.2 STM and RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM.

Colour tools include Canon Picture Styles and Filmtone Colour Filters. A Smooth Skin effect can be adjusted for portraits in camera.

The EOS R8 Mark II is the first camera to include Canon’s Dual Pixel 3D imaging technology. It can capture JPEGs containing depth information and convert them into 3D content using the free Dual Pixel 3D Converter App for Windows.

Connectivity includes Wi-Fi (2.4GHz / 5GHz) and Bluetooth 5.3, with support for the Canon Camera Connect app for remote shooting.
