Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd

Sony Music Entertainment Africa (Pty) Ltd is Sony Music Entertainment’s South African operating subsidiary, headquartered in Johannesburg. It is the entity named on phonogram credits as exclusive licensee for South African artists released through Sony’s regional structure, distinct from the separately incorporated Sony Music Entertainment West Africa (Lagos) and Sony Music Entertainment East Africa entities.

The company has held an exclusive licensing relationship with independent label Vth Season covering rapper AKA (Kiernan Forbes) across two spells: 2011 to 2016, and again from October 2018. Managing director Sean Watson, who joined Sony Music as an executive director in 2009, has been named publicly in connection with the company’s South African artist roster, including in statements following AKA’s death in February 2023. Refiloe Ramogase was named as the company’s general manager in October 2018 coverage of the AKA re-signing.

As a major-label regional subsidiary, the company does not operate a dedicated public-facing website separate from Sony Music’s global corporate site.
