MCSN

Nigeria's collecting society for musical works and sound recordings, based in Lagos since 1984.

MCSN (Musical Copyright Society Nigeria Ltd/Gte) is one of Nigeria’s collective management organisations (CMOs), licensing and monitoring the use of musical works and, on its own account, sound recordings, then distributing the royalties collected to its members. It was established in 1984 and is based in Lagos.

As a CMO it is member-based rather than a commercial company with disclosed shareholders. It holds NCC (Nigerian Copyright Commission) approval and was named the sole recipient of the first tranche of Nigeria’s 2026 private-copying levy. Its licensing mandate has also put it in public dispute with rival bodies over territory and members, reported in Nigerian press as “Active, disputed.”

MCSN’s role sits alongside Nigeria’s other CMOs in the collection and distribution of musical and neighbouring rights royalties, a function distinct from record labels, publishers or distributors also covered in this directory.
