Tipify launches Streams vs. Tips campaign on streaming pay gap

Tipify has launched a campaign comparing average fan tips with estimated streaming royalties and offering artists a free digital toolkit.

Tipify launches ‘Streams vs. Tips’ campaign highlighting gap between streaming, fan support

Tipify has introduced a campaign that contrasts music streaming income with direct financial support from fans. The initiative includes a free toolkit for artists to show audiences what a single tip can mean compared with streaming royalties.

The Streams vs. Tips campaign uses an average tip of US$7.50 on Tipify and an estimated streaming payout of US$0.004 per stream. Under that calculation, one average tip equals about 1,875 streams.

Dan Carucci, Tipify founder and CEO, said: “Streaming has fundamentally changed how artists distribute and fans discover and listen to music, but discovery alone doesn’t make an artist’s career sustainable.”

“When one fan can provide the same financial support through a single tip that might otherwise require nearly 2,000 streams, the power of that direct relationship becomes impossible to ignore. Streams vs. Tips gives independent artists a way to show their fans what their support can actually mean.”

Toolkit for artists#

Rather than running the comparison only as a platform campaign, Tipify has released a free digital toolkit. It includes:

  • graphics
  • customisable templates
  • social media captions
  • short-form video scripts

Artists can also use their own streaming and royalty data from distributor dashboards to show audiences how many streams were required to generate specific payouts. Tipify says the initiative is intended to provide greater visibility into the economics of independent music and the role of direct fan support.

Direct fan support as an income stream#

The campaign forms part of Tipify’s broader effort to position direct fan contributions as an additional source of income alongside streaming, touring, merchandise and licensing.

Matt Eastwood, Tipify chief marketing officer, said: “Fans already support artists with their love, their enthusiasm and their loyalty. We’re giving them another way to turn that connection into meaningful financial support. A thousand fans at $5 a month is equivalent to over 15 million streams per year. That’s the kind of change that is needed to keep independent music thriving.”

The platform’s comparison is based on an assumed US$0.004 per-stream rate, although actual streaming royalties vary depending on the platform, territory, rights arrangements and other factors.

Artists can access the campaign toolkit through Tipify’s Streams vs. Tips campaign page.
