Apple Music to Label AI-Generated Tracks Later This Year

Apple Music has told industry partners that AI music labels will roll out later this year, with no specific launch date disclosed.

Apple Music AI music labeling

Apple Music has shared new details about its plan to label tracks created with artificial intelligence, telling music industry partners in an email on Thursday that the labels will roll out later this year without a specific launch date.

The announcement follows the platform’s earlier introduction of AI Transparency Tags, which allow record labels and music distributors to flag uploads that were materially generated using AI.

How the labeling will work#

Apple Music said it will rely primarily on content providers, including record labels and distributors, to apply the transparency tags. The company described those partners as best positioned to know how their content was created.

The email did not specify how the requirements will be enforced.

Industry-wide push for AI disclosure#

The move is part of a broader effort led by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) to have streaming services label AI content in a way similar to explicit track disclosures.

Spotify has announced a comparable initiative, saying AI-created artists would be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations. Spotify labels artist profiles rather than individual songs, and its April AI song labeling feature makes disclosure on individual tracks voluntary.

Fraud and streaming manipulation concerns#

Across digital service providers (DSPs), AI disclosure efforts come as platforms report rising volumes of AI-generated uploads and related fraud concerns. Spotify and Deezer have both reported sharp increases in AI-generated tracks over the past year.

Apple Music has doubled its penalty fees for accounts caught engaging in streaming fraud.
