SAMPRA, the South African Music Performance Rights Association, is a collective management organisation that administers needletime (neighbouring) rights on behalf of South African recording artists and record labels. It collects royalties when commercially released sound recordings are played in public, under the Copyright Act 98 of 1978 and the Performers Protection Act 11 of 1967 as amended.
SAMPRA is one of three rights bodies operating in the South African market alongside SAMRO, which handles performing rights for composers and publishers, and CAPASSO, which handles mechanical rights; a South African recording artist may need to register with all three to collect the full range of royalties owed on a release. SAMPRA also runs a development fund supporting touring artists and a member retirement and burial scheme.
